Time to take a walk

The past number of years we have watched walkers passing our back yard on the last day and first day of the year.  We had a vague notion that these walkers were part of the Volksmarchers group. This year we decided to become part of this walking event.  As experienced walkers of walks up to 6 miles we thought this would be a nice new tradition to start our new year.

The walks are organized by Freestate Happy Wanderers and start their walks from the Owen Brown Village office on Cradlerock Way.  The New Year walks varied from 5K to 6K to 10K.  Registration for the walk was $3 a person.

Using the Columbia path system down to Lake Elkhorn the brisk weather encouraged walkers to move at a pace to generate as much body heat as possible.  Given the number of walkers encountered along the path this event has become a popular event. While there was a range of ages of walkers was wide the predominate age seemed to be 50+.   A wide range of refreshments were provided when walkers returned to the Village Center office.
The Maryland group offers walks all over Maryland during the year.  The next local walk is along the C&O Canal starting at the third parking area at the Carderock Recreation Area at the C&O Canal Towpath in Cabin John, Maryland on January 18th.  Registration for this walk is from 10 to 11 am and walkers must finish by 2 pm. Walks will be both 5K and 10K. For more info on this walk you can email Jone Parr at Jone.P@comcast.net

P.S.
From the website it appears that the Columbia Volksmarch must have merged with the Freestate Wanders.

   Ahh the 60's!

I wish I still had a picture of my college days like the one of this happy couple.  I wonder whatever happened to them???

Oh yeah now I remember

She looks better without the 60's glasses but I like his long hair better.
