Wilde Lake Middle School Net Zero Energy

Howard County has always been on the cutting edge in education.  We all remember the open classrooms and other innovations that were attempted.  Now we have move away from that model in the newest model for schools.  I have to admit that I think the concept of an open classroom was a good idea for some students but it may not have worked for all students just like our traditional classroom design doesn't work well for many other students.  The challenge is how do you design schools that recognize the large variations in how children learn.

The latest trend in school design is energy efficiency.  The image above is the design drawing of the new Wilde Lake Middle School that should be completed by next fall 2016.  The existing school will then be torn down to make space for the new ball fields.  The new school will use less than 1/3 the energy of the typical school of this size.  In addition to the energy efficiency the school will be built to use the latest in technology with electronic tablets, other multi media and internet technology.  Each student entering a classroom will take an electronic tablet from a charging station and return it to the charging station as they leave the classroom.  All lights will automatically go off when there is no one in the room.   Here is the info on the new school.
