"From the peaks of the Himalayas to the shores of the Indian Ocean, the cultures of six South Asian countries will be represented and celebrated at an event sponsored by Columbia Association (CA) and the Howard County Library System.
The
South Asia Culture Café will be held Sunday, Nov. 4, from 1:30 to 4:30
p.m. at the library system’s Miller Branch, located at 9421 Frederick
Road in Ellicott City. It is the latest in a series that has also
included culture cafés for West Africa, Latin America and East Asia.
“The
idea is to share the diversity that we have here in Columbia and Howard
County,” said Laura Smit, CA’s program manager for international
exchange and multicultural programs. “We want to foster a greater
understanding, appreciation and respect for international cultures, and
promote opportunities for residents to develop relationships with those
from different backgrounds.”
The
free event isn’t just for those from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal,
Pakistan and Sri Lanka, but also for anyone interested in South Asian
culture. Families are invited to enjoy these cultures during an
afternoon of displays, dance performances, henna tattoos, music and
children’s stories. South Asian snacks and drinks will be provided.
Families can pick up a “Culture Café Passport” upon arrival and complete it for door prizes. For more information, call 410-715-3162."
