Reading a book to have a shared community experience

I received information last week about a "book connection" that can be a way a community can share a reading experience.  Think of it as a community wide book club.  Sounded very interesting and I plan on participating and even nominated the book "Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America." Check out the site.

"The Howard County Book Connection, a partnership between HCC and the Howard County Library System (HCLS), is soliciting nominations for the 2013-14 book.  To nominate a book, please use the online form on the Book Connection website.  The deadline for nominations is Friday, March 16, 2012.

One of the main goals of the Book Connection is to connect our community through shared learning experiences that promote productive dialogue, critical thinking, and intellectual enrichment.  The committee uses the following criteria to select the book.  This year, the committee is particularly interested in fiction books since we have had non-fiction books for the last two years.

·         The style of the book should be accessible and engaging to an interdisciplinary audience of adult readers.
·         The form of the book may be fiction or non-fiction.
·         The content of the book should suggest possibilities for lively discussion from a variety of disciplinary perspectives.

For more information and to see lists of suggested books, go to the Nominating a Book page on the Book Connection website."
